Script timer
Paste a script to see how long it runs read aloud, and whether it fits the spot you are cutting it for. Pick a kind of read or type your own pace.
How many words is a script at 140 words a minute?
| Running time | Words |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | 140 words |
| 2 minutes | 280 words |
| 3 minutes | 420 words |
| 5 minutes | 700 words |
| 10 minutes | 1,400 words |
Each length in detail: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes.
How we work it out
We count the words and divide by the pace. Chinese and Japanese have no spaces between words, so their characters are counted two to a word, the same rule the app uses for its own reading-time estimate. The presets are our own starting points for each kind of read and were never measured as averages: a calm keynote runs slower than a radio spot, and your pace is your own. For the most accurate number, measure yours and type it in.
On the day, Cutvey Teleprompter shows the estimated time left as you read, and voice follow keeps pace with you.
The presets
| Kind of read | Pace |
|---|---|
| Keynote | 120 words a minute |
| Self-tape | 130 words a minute |
| Piece to camera | 140 words a minute |
| Explainer | 145 words a minute |
| Voiceover | 150 words a minute |
| Commercial read | 165 words a minute |
Why they differ: speaking rate, explained.

The pace and the spot length sit in the page address, so a link opens the timer set the same way. The script itself is never in the address, is never stored and is never sent. Print the page for the call sheet and you get the running time and the tables without the menus.
Reading for real? The app does the rest.
Cutvey Teleprompter counts down the estimated time left while you read, fits a script into a set number of seconds in timed mode, follows your voice on the device, and exports captions and edit markers after the take. $19.99 once for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
